Protected View

There are many security holes that Office macros have opened up in the past. Having a default protected view in Excel for suspect documents makes it much less likely that one inadvertently runs a macro virus on the computer. This could occur whenever one downloads a file or receives an email.

Sparklines

Excel contains Sparklines, which are mini charts that fit inside of single cells. Very often one just need to get a quick sense of how data is trending and no more. Sparklines allow users to get a very rapid glance of data without taking up screen real estate.

Backstage

Within the File menu is the Backstage view, which shows in a very systematic organization all of the different options and parameters for working with Office, including handling preferences, downloading updates and arranging documents.

SkyDrive Integration

Excel makes it seamless to connect to a Microsoft SkyDrive account, allowing easy access to all Office documents from any computer. SkyDrive appears as a preferred option, making remote storage and retrieval of documents simple.

Ribbon Improvements

The ribbon in Excel is noticeably cleaner and more streamlined than before. There are fewer disappearing ribbon icons like there were with the previous version, and thought was put into organizing buttons in a much more pragmatic manner.

Slicer

With Slicer a user can segment information in their spreadsheet very easily to present a subset of relevant information. Only desired information is displayed, and undesired information is left off.

Web features

Excel’s collaboration features allow much easier collaboration on a document, not only across multiple users but across those who are using either the desktop or Web version of the program.

Status Bar Tracking

The new and improved status bar makes it easy to see who else is collaborating on a document, and what changes they’ve made.
